Kickstarter for a Friend

Hi friends!

My name is Justin Castaneda and I am the creator of the
When I Was Little picture book series. I met Dave and Rene of Instant Press Comics at Wizard World Chicago a few years back. We have since shared the convention floor and continue to build a great creative friendship. They were kind enough to have me do a guest post because I have a new book project I am raising funds for thru Kickstarter.

The way Kickstarter works is it funds creativity. It accepts donations to help creative people get their passion projects made. Artists, writers, and filmmakers can set up a Kickstarter campaign and by supporting them and their work, you get rewarded! For instance when you donate to my project, you can receive a signed copy, sketch cards, digital prints, buttons, custom art and a lot more.

So the name of my new book is called, Heart. Heart is a story about love and acceptance. This book has been a labor of love for many years. I really believe in this book. It's been an idea birthed through the struggles I had growing up trying to find where I fit in. I had difficulty making friends and I thought for the longest time it's because of who I was as a person. I thought if I changed who I was I would find my place. It wasn't until much later when I learned all that was non-sense and the most important thing I could ever do was: To Be Myself.

It's a bit more expensive to release a hardcover children'
s book than I had anticipated. I didn't want to cop out into doing it as a softcover, it's not meant to be that way. With the help of some fellow creatives that gave me an extra push, I started this Kickstarter campaign:

I hope you can help support the book and the message this book gives.

I thank you for your time and consideration and thanks again to Dave and Rene for letting me post on their blog!

Dan Con has come and gone. Thanks to all the folks that came out and supported the release of House of the Wolfman. The Dan Con exclusive sketch covers were a hit and here are some of the covers that were done and sold at the show:

And as a special treat we got one done by a friend of ours, Justin Castaneda.
We're going to be doing Free Comic Book day at First Aid comics again this year and we've discussed having a sketch cover available exclusively for James at First Aid. As soon as we get the artwork done we'll post it here and on the website. Our next show however will be the highly anticipated C2E2 at the McCormick Place.

Distant Collected

This year we at Instant Press Comics will not just be celebrating our 10th anniversary, but also the 5th anniversary of our best selling title, Distant. For the past four years we've been selling several sets of the popular mini series at conventions and the fans have been asking for a collected edition. To celebrate the 5th year, we are going to finally collect all four issues and the FCBD ashcan "Not So Distant" under one cover. There will also be new pinups as well as new illustrations by Manuel Preitano. Look forward to this collected volume in March of 2012 for just $9.95. You can check out the official site for more information and also on how to order your very own copy.

10 Years Of Instant Press Comics

Happy New Year to everybody out there.

This year is a special year for Instant Press Comics. We are celebrating 10 years of publishing! Keep an eye here as we let you know where we will be signing at and what goodies we have coming out for the celebration.

Without a doubt we will be celebrating the fifth year of Distant, our most popular title here. For the first time, we will be collecting all 4 issues, not to mention Not-So-Distant, the free mini comic giveaway as well as pinups new and old and a brand new wraparound cover. We'll give you more details on that as it becomes available.

Further more, we'll be putting together for the first time in 10 years an annual book. That's right. This year we'll have Instant Press 2012 for sale. It's going to feature, as the original book did, new short stories from all the creators at Instant Press Comics. We'll have Starbomb, WhiteKnife, Laundry Detergent Man, Unit 1, Dorks and everybody's favorite, The Wolfman. We're all excited about this one. After 10 years we're going to get it right once again.

So there you have it. As the year goes we'll post more news on what's to be expected. For those of you waiting on the edge of your seats after the exciting cliffhanger in Starbomb issue 2 you'll be happy to know that issue 3 is being worked on and we'll have that out too.

Dan Con 2012

Instant Press is a confirmed guest for Dan Con 2012. This past year was a remarkable start for a fresh new show. Decapitated Dan was a very generous host and he really knew how to cater to the artist and exhibitors as well as the attendee's. This show has quickly become a must for convention goers. Take a look at highlights from earlier this year if you're not convinced here.

Here's what Dan Con has to say about Instant Press Comics:
"Instant Press Comics is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2012. The party kicks off at Dan Con! IPC publishes a variety of genres: superhero (Starbomb, Unbelievable Laundry Detergent Man), manga (Distant, The Mysteries of Bakerville), action (White Knife) and cartoon (Dorks, Bride of the Wolfman). New books for 2012 include House of the Wolfman, Distant Collected Trade, and Instant Press 2012. Artist Rene Castellano and writer David Gruba will be in attendance. You can check out IPC at www.instantpresscomics.com or follow them on Twitter @NstantPress."

Dave Gruba, Dann Phillips and Rene Castellano were in attendance and much fun was had. We hope to bring more to the table next year so as we plan our schedules for next year enjoy this look at our season closer.

From Words To Pictures

Hey everybody. This past weekend was a pretty busy weekend for Instant Press. Kicking off the last convention of the season, Dave and Rene did a presentation at the Beverly Arts Center on the south side of Chicago. The kids in the school had a fun project of putting together a comic book about a famous person in history so we were brought in to help mentor them on how comic books are made. A great tag team of artist and writer giving a presentation about the different stages of a comic books life. The kids were great and to our surprise, they had some really great questions. We were expecting stuff like, is Superman real or do we draw Pokemon but that wasn't the case. One question that sticks out in my mind was, "Is there anything that gets lost in the when the artwork is done in black and white rather then color?" I had no idea that's how kids thought these days. I hope they learned alot and Dave and I really had a great time talking to them. Here are some pics of the event.

Wizard World 2011 - Day Three

Final day at Wizard World. You would think it would be a nice relaxing day but the crowds demanded comics. It was crazy busy and Instant Press was there selling books to several fans. Thanks to those that picked up our books and also took the time out to let their picture be taken. Until 2012.
